David began his career in the securities industry in 1993 as a Financial Advisor with the Greensboro office of Interstate/Johnson Lane Inc. In 2000, he moved his successful practice to PaineWebber which later became UBS. He completed the firm’s Wealth Management Program and established a group practice with Jimmy Simmons and Jeff Chowning. He and his partners joined the Greensboro office of Davenport & Company in late 2009. After Jimmy retired in 2023, the team became Severance & Chowning.

David earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from The Citadel. He is Series 7, 63, and 65 registered with the Financial Industry Regulatory Association (FINRA), and is licensed to sell insurance and annuity products. He is also a board CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional and Accredited Asset Management Specialist (AAMS).

Before establishing his investment career, David spent a year as an airline pilot with Business Express (a Delta Airlines regional carrier) flying routes in the northeast. He served in the U.S. Army from 1985 to 1991. He attained the rank of Captain and was a UH-60 Blackhawk pilot and Flight Leader while serving in Desert Storm.

David believes in investing in the community where you live and participates in the Bikes for Kids program in Greensboro. He lives in Reidsville, North Carolina and has three adult children. In his free time, David enjoys spending time with family and some of his hobbies include motorcycle riding, kayaking and traveling.
