Financial Guidance Through Life's Transitions

James E. Davidson Jr., CFP®
Vice President—Investments
Life is a series of events and transitions...sometimes planned, but often unexpected. In addition to managing investment portfolios and providing investment advice, my goal is to help you prepare for, and successfully navigate through, life's major events.
As a Certified Financial Planner™ practitioner, with more than 17 years of experience, I enjoy learning new information and teaching others, and I utilize these skills to help my clients make informed, prudent decisions regarding their financial planning and investment needs.

investment philosophy

For 30 years, Davenport Asset Management has been managing client assets the same way they manage the firm's employee Profit Sharing Plan; the cornerstone of my investment strategy is to offer my clients access to these same portfolios. I can think of no better way to demonstrate the conviction we hold in our own strategies than by investing alongside my clients. For us, having skin in the game ensures we continue to put the interests of our clients first.

My entire professional career has centered around the important responsibility of helping people and organizations manage resources appropriately.

I began my professional career in 1995 at CarMax, a “pre-IPO” start-up company with only two locations, progressing quickly through the ranks from Buyer-in-Training, to Buyer, then Senior Buyer, and was promoted to Purchasing Manager in 1997. As part of my promotion, my family was transferred to Arlington, Texas to help open a new location, oversee ~$7,500,000 of inventory and mentor the Purchasing Staff; subsequently we became the most profitable CarMax store in the Texas region in March 1999.

Later in 1999, we moved our family back to Richmond, where I joined First Union Bank as a Financial Specialist, gaining broad banking, investment and mortgage financing experience working primarily with individuals and families. I was recruited by one of my banking and mortgage clients to join Legg Mason as a registered Financial Advisor in 2002 and in 2006 I completed the rigorous education and examination requirements to earn the Certified Financial Planner™ professional designation.

In 2007, following the sale of Legg Mason to Citigroup/Smith Barney, I moved my practice to Davenport & Company LLC, a well-respected and employee owned firm.

I completed my Bachelor of Science degree as a Psychology major in 1995 from Virginia Commonwealth University. While attending VCU, I was President of Psi Chi Honor Society and Vice-President, Treasurer and then President of the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) fraternity. During my senior year, I was honored to be recognized in the “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges” and to speak at the graduation ceremony for the VCU School of Psychology.

Family & Community

My wife Carolyn and I met at VCU in 1993, were married in 1996, and we have a son, Joshua. I enjoy spending time with my family, cycling, outdoor adventures, and playing guitar. We attend North Star Community where we help with the youth group and music ministry and we are grateful to actively work with the local recovery community.

Passionate about continuing education and community involvement, I am a volunteer instructor for the Lifelong Learning Institute of Chesterfield (LLI), and have served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors; currently I also manage the LLI Endowment Fund.

As an avid cyclist, and in honor of a family member and other friends with MS, I have participated in the National MS Society Bike MS event- managing Team Davenport to help raise more than $60,000 in donations to fight and find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. I have also served as Trustee on the Board of Directors and as a volunteer on the Bike MS committee for the Virginia-West Virginia Chapter of the National MS Society.
